Reading and Phonics

The school follows the Letters and Sounds Principles and Practice published by the Department for Education. Daily phonics sessions take place in all our early years and KS1 classes.

We place great emphasis on the importance of reading. We use a range of guided reading texts across the school.  Texts are discussed to ensure children's understanding of what they have read.  Each class has a reading list of six quality books to be read over the year and sets of readers to enable discussion and appreciation of literature.

Chilren are encouraged to read for enjoyment and each class has its own mini library with a range of books on offer.  Children may borrow books from the school library to take home.

We celebrate World Book Day every year when book characters come alive and attend school for the day!

Whenever possible, the school provides additional, practical and enrichment activities to embed and support learning. This includes outings and specialist visitors to the school.
