Practical Information
General health & safety
  • Is my child okay to go to school?

If your child or any member of a child's household shows symptoms, then your child/children should not come to school.

Symptoms consistent with Covid-19 infection, include:

    • a high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature)
    • a new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual)
    • a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal

To protect others, do not go to places like a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital if you have any of these symptoms.

Get a test to check if you have coronavirus and stay at home until you get your result. This applies to all members of the household where symptoms  have been identified.

Notify the school office by sending an email to: office@stjstj.co.uk

Self-isolation recommendations should be followed if a positive test result is identified.

  • Should my child wear a mask?

Current guidance from the Department of Education, NHS and WHO is that children under the age of  12 should not wear masks.

As classes are in identified bubble groups and the tracking procedures are in place within the school, masks will not be worn by children on either school campus.

Decisions related to the wearing of masks will be continuously monitored and modified depending on any changes to departmental guidance.

  • What else should my child bring to school?

No items should be brought from home. All students should bring their coat and, if necessary, a bag for home reading books, which will be provided by the school.

No pencil cases, books from home, toys or other items should be brought on to either site.

  • Will my child be expected to go on school trips?

All school trips are currently suspended.

Further decisions related to school trips in the future will be made and planned for based on departmental guidance, risk assessments and communication with the school's governing and parent body.

  • Will breakfast and after-school clubs run at St. James & St. John?

Breakfast club will not operate at this time. If you have concerns or would like to speak to the school office about the need for breakfast club provision, please contact the school office.

After-school clubs will be operating after the Easter holidays. For further information, please contact the school office at office@stjstj.co.uk.

  • What are the expectations of students?

Students are expected to know and adhere to the safety guidelines  which are likely to change from time to time based on government guidance.

Students  will be informed of the guidance and any changes to the guidance through lessons and communication with parents.

Students must wash/sanitise their hands upon entering and exiting their building and at regular intervals during the day.

Students who are not feeling well or suffering from symptoms are to notify their teacher immediately.

Students should dispose of used tissues and paper towel in the identified bins.

Students should not interact with other class bubbles  and only use the identified toilets for their class bubble.

  • What are the expectations of teachers?

Teachers will not come to school if they have symptoms of illness.

Teachers must wash/sanitise their hands upon entering and exiting the building.

Teachers must maintain the 2m distance rule with any other adult and should avoid, as much as is possible, physical contact with students.

Teachers will ensure that students comply with necessary hygiene measures and will encourage frequent hand washing/sanitisation and distancing requirements.

Teachers will ensure that classroom windows and doors are kept open to assist in the appropriate ventilation of classrooms.

Teachers will ensure that appropriate cleaning provisions and hygiene products are stocked in classrooms.

  • What if a student develops Covid-19 symptoms at school?

Students with symptoms of Covid-19 will be immediately transferred to the identified and supervised isolation area of the school to await collection by a parent.

Parents will be called and asked to pick up their child as quickly as possible. If the student has siblings in other classes, they must also return home with parents.

Parents should contact the testing  locations to identify whether their child and other members of the family should undertake the Covid-19 test.

If a test is undertaken and the results are identified as positive, the parents should participate in the NHS track and trace system currently in place.

The school will follow guidance to inform the local health protection team and then follow recommendations from this team to inform all close and proximity contacts when identified necessary.

Proximity precautions will be put in place for all students within the contact bubble and provisions for remote learning, if necessary, will be put in place for all children and staff affected.

  • What if a student exhibits Covid-19 symptoms while at home?

Onsite Learning Provision
  • How are students getting access to and moving around the buildings?

Class bubbles will be given staggered start and finish times to access the buildings and will work on individual class bubble timetables to minimise the possibility of contact with other class bubbles.

Movement around the buildings will be minimised or timetabled to minimise the risk of separate class bubbles interacting.

Staff members will also access following social distancing guidance and restrictions are in place for identified spaces around the building to identify the number of people permitted in separate spaces.

Staff will also adhere to social distancing guidance placed on floors to ensure safe social distancing is enforced.

A one-way system has been put in place for exiting buildings with the Westminster City Council closed street program enforced to ensure safe social distancing measures are in place outside the school.

  • How are classrooms and class bubbles set up?

Classrooms in Years 1-6 have individual desks with individual storage space available for each child facing the front of the room to minimise the amount of face-to-face contact within class bubbles. Social distancing measures between staff members and students and the provision of PPE have been put in place where appropriate, however, the safety and well-being of the student will take priority when social distancing measures may put a child's safety at risk.

An EYFS bubble group exists with both Nursery and Reception included in it, however, both classes are being kept separated as best as possible to minimise the risk of transmission of the virus.

Sharing of resources has been minimised with individual resources provided in Years 1-6 and regular and extra cleaning protocols being followed to ensure the minimisation of contraction of the virus from high-frequency touch points.

Cleaning of shared spaces takes place throughout the day.

Frequent hand washing and hygiene practises are also in place within all bubble groups.

  • How are lunch and play times organised?

Lunch is taken in separate bubble groups with lunch provided for all classes in shortened time slots to allow for the staggered school day.

Time for physical activity outdoors is provided for all classes in staggered and individual class bubble time slots. Separate resources for each bubble group are provided and cleaned daily.

Lunch is currently provided in classrooms for Nursery and Reception. Years 1-6 currently eat lunch in separate dining hall sessions.

  • How are hygiene practices and social distancing being used?

Guidance and information for safe hygiene practices are on display throughout the school and in each classroom.

Frequent handwashing takes place throughout the day and PPE is provided for staff members in the case of crossing teaching spaces, providing medical help or intimate care.

Social distancing measures are in place with identified person quotas in work spaces and marked social distancing spaces on floors.

All meetings are held either remotely or in a socially distanced manner outside.

Remote Learning Provision
  • What learning will be provided if my child is self-isolating?

If your child is self-isolating or quarantining, remote learning support is provided via a 15-day work programme, which is posted on the school's website and sent via email from the class email account. This 15 day programme provides learning for English, Maths and Foundation subjects.

Quarantine and Self-isolation Work can be found here.

Teachers and/or staff will also make keeping-in-touch phone calls to provide assistance or support.

This work should only be done when the child is well enough to complete it.

  • What learning will be provided if my child's bubble is self-isolating?

If your child's bubble is isolating, remote learning will be put in place as per the school's remote learning policy.

    Remote Learning Policy

Lessons and feedback will be provided via Google Classroom with video provision occurring 3-4 times per day. Work will also be provided/made available if difficulties arise with online learning.

  • What learning will be provided if the school is forced to close or partially close?

In the case of whole school closure or partial closure, remote learning provision will be made through the use of Google Classroom and 3-4 daily video learning sessions provided on Google Meet. Stage 3 of the school's remote learning policy can be viewed below:
